HIGHLIGHT
Nestled in misty hills, Kandy is Sri Lanka’s cultural heart — home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth, vibrant traditions, serene lakes, royal gardens, and captivating Kandyan dance performances.
Beyond its spiritual significance, Kandy is also a city of scenic beauty. The calm waters of Kandy Lake, built by the last Sinhalese king, mirror the surrounding hills and temple spires, offering the perfect setting for a quiet stroll. A short drive away, the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya invite you to wander among towering palm avenues, exotic orchids, and colonial-era greenhouses — a paradise for nature lovers.
Kandy is also the stage for one of Asia’s most dazzling cultural celebrations — the Esala Perahera. Held annually in July or August, this grand procession features traditional dancers, whip-crackers, fire performers, and lavishly adorned elephants parading through the city’s streets. It’s a spectacle of devotion, artistry, and tradition that draws crowds from across the globe.
The best time to visit Kandy is from December to April, when the weather is dry and sunny. Temperatures remain mild year-round, with cooler evenings and monsoon rains in May–July and October–November.
