After arriving in Colombo, we’ll transfer to Negambo. The rest of the day is at our leisure to recover from the strenuous journey.
We’ll start the day early and head to Auradhapura after breakfast. From here, our approximately four-hour safari into Wilpattu National Park begins. Here, we’ll have the opportunity to observe a variety of animals, and with a bit of luck, we might even spot a rare leopard. Afterwards, we’ll continue to Anuradhapura.
In the oldest and most important royal city, Anuradhapura, there are many Buddhist cult buildings in an extensive field of ruins. We explore three ancient monasteries by bike and see the offshoot of the sacred Bodi tree under which Buddha is said to have found enlightenment.
Afterwards, we continue to Mihinthale, the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
After breakfast, we continue to Habarana. On the way, we visit the Aukana Buddha statue, carved 13 meters high into the rock. We then continue to Minneriya National Park, which is particularly known for its large herds of elephants. There are also deer, buffalo, and numerous birds to be seen. The jeep safari lasts three hours; we arrive at our hotel in Habarana in the evening.
Early in the morning, we take a short drive to Sigiriya, where we take a 90-minute bike ride through the jungle. Afterwards, we climb the famous Lion Rock with its magnificent frescoes of the “Cloud Maidens.” Further steep stairs lead us to the summit of the rock, where we see the ruins of the palace, which once spanned three floors.
After returning to the hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure. There is an optional village tour available. The tour guide will be happy to share tips. Dinner includes a cooking class and takes place with a local family.
We get up early this morning and climb Pidurangala Rock. From the top, you have a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape. The sound of peacocks and monkeys screaming in the distance is unique. You can also take beautiful photos of Lion Rock opposite, which we climbed ourselves the day before.
We return to the hotel for breakfast. After a short drive, we reach Dambulla, where, after a short climb, we visit the five rock caves with countless Buddha statues, one of the oldest cult sites on the island. Afterwards, we continue via Matale to the Knuckles Range, a high mountain range with tropical mountain forests.
Today, a hike (approx. 10 km – 4.5 hours) through the Knuckles Mountains awaits us, offering unique natural experiences: dense deciduous forests and rice terraces nestled on steep slopes. We’ll have a picnic lunch by a river with an opportunity for a swim. In the afternoon, we’ll return to our accommodation. The rest of the day is at leisure.
After a three-hour drive, we reach Kandy. On our way there, we visit the impressive Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. Afterwards, we visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, where a relic of Buddha’s tooth is kept. In the evening, we enjoy a traditional dance performance by the temple dancers.
After breakfast, we’ll take the train to Hatton. From there, we’ll continue to Kithulgaga. Here, we can embark on a rafting trip on the Kelani River, where the famous film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” was filmed. This optional rafting trip lasts between 90 and 180 minutes, depending on how much time we want to spend on the river.
Afterwards, we’ll continue to Adam’s Peak, where we can relax in our accommodation until we begin our ascent around midnight. The climb to the summit at 2,243 meters takes approximately 3.5 hours. We’ll reach the summit in time for a sunrise that we hope will be unforgettable.
After the descent from Adam’s Peak (approx. 3 hours), we’ll have enough time at our hotel for breakfast, a shower, and a rest before starting our journey into the highlands to Nuwara Eliya (approx. 3 hours). Along the way, we’ll visit a tea factory and learn about the production of the famous Ceylon tea, which we’ll also have the opportunity to taste on site.
Equipped with a packed breakfast, we set off early in the morning for Horton Plains National Park. Here, we take an extended hike through the cloud forest (approximately 3 hours). Afterwards, we continue to Ella, where we spend two nights.
In the morning, we hike to Ella Rock (approx. 4 hours). The trail initially takes us along the railway line and then through villages, past tea plantations, and vegetable fields. Upon reaching the summit, we can enjoy breathtaking views of the landscape.
In the afternoon, we take a short hike to Little Adam’s Peak. The mountain is 1,141 meters high, and at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most beautiful views in Sri Lanka.
Today we continue south. We stop in Buduruwagala, where we can marvel at the impressive rock reliefs in the middle of the jungle. In the afternoon we reach Mirissa, where we will spend our last two days in Sri Lanka.
Relaxing on the beach. Optional whale watching.
On the way to the airport in Colombo we make a stopover in Galle and visit the old town there.
