After arriving in Colombo, transfer to Habarana (approx. 4 hours). The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Habarana.
Early in the morning, we take a short drive to Sigiriya. We climb the famous Lion Rock with its magnificent frescoes of the “Cloud Maidens.” Further steep stairs lead us to the summit of the rock, where we find the ruins of the palace, which once stretched over three floors.
In the afternoon, we explore Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second royal city, with its significant ruins, by bike. Overnight in Habarana.
After breakfast, we begin our approximately two-hour hike to the village of Hiriwaduna, where we’ll learn about the daily lives of the villagers. We then take a catamaran across the lake to a farming family and enjoy their hospitality.
In the afternoon, we’ll take a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, looking for herds of elephants, buffalo, and other animals. Overnight in Habarana.
After a short drive, we reach Dambulla, where, after a short climb, we visit the five rock caves with countless Buddha statues and ceiling paintings, one of the oldest places of worship on the island. We then continue to Kandy.
In the evening, we participate in a ceremony at the sacred Temple of the Tooth. A relic of the Buddha’s tooth is kept here. Afterwards, we enjoy a traditional dance performance by the temple dancers. Overnight in Kandy.
In the morning, we visit the Botanical Garden in Peradeniya, which was established by the British on the Mahaweli River. In the afternoon, we have time to explore the city of Kandy on our own. Overnight in Kandy.
After breakfast, we set off on a train ride to Nanu Oya, the highlands, on what is arguably the most beautiful railway line in the country.
On the train, we have the best chance of interacting directly with the locals. Our driver will pick us up at the station and we’ll visit a tea factory. There, we’ll learn interesting facts about the production of the famous Ceylon tea, which we’ll also have the opportunity to taste on-site. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Equipped with a packed breakfast, we set off early in the morning for Horton Plains National Park. Here, we take an extended hike through the cloud forest (approximately 3 hours).
In the afternoon, we explore Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England,” on a city tour. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
Today we continue south and make our first stop at the Ravana Ella Waterfall. After a short drive, we reach Buduruwagala, where we can marvel at the impressive rock carvings in the middle of the jungle.
Upon arrival in Udawalawe, we’ll go on an afternoon safari in the local national park, known for its particularly large elephant population. Overnight in Udawalawe.
In the morning, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the elephant breeding center. Contact with the animals is not permitted, as they are being prepared for release into the wild here.
In the afternoon, we reach the city of Galle and visit its old town, the best-preserved Dutch fortress in Asia. Afterwards, we continue to our beach hotel. Overnight in Mirissa or Unawatuna.
